Default opteron or xeon

Hello,
I was about to purchase a new dedicated server with the following specifications:

2.8 Quad Xeon
2GB Ram
1x500 HD (Primary)
1x250 (Secondary)

However, somebody told me before I purchase anything to check out replacing the Quad Xeon processors with a Dual AMD Opteron 246. I will just be using this server to host basic shared and reseller plans.

The server company I am getting it from is allowing me the option of either one of processors. What one would you guys recomend?

Based on the assumption that what they mean by saying "Quad Xeon" is 2 Xeon processors with Hyperthreading turned on.

That may or may not be a good thing as some applications have shown to perform worse with hyperthreading on.

I would personaly choose the Dual AMD Single Core Opterons.

There are some benchmark tests here are WHT with both of those types of systems included those would help in your decision. -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --

While it might help a little, a large factor of the total scores of those benchmark tests is based on disk performance and may not reflect your "real world" application.

You could ask your hosting company if they have done various apache bench testing or mysql tests on the comparing platforms and how they differ.

In setting up a bunch of servers recently, one of the first things I did was write down all the unixbench-wht scores for the servers running in raid 5 vs raid 6, 32 bit vs 64 bit, dual single core vs single dual core... and all combinations of that.

Glad to help you
