Default site log files

need some info. please help

I would like to know if there is a rule to maintain website log files for a certain period of time. For example, most of the hard drive space in my server is occupied by log files, hence I want to set a log rotation on the server which deletes the log files which are older than a specific period say 30days. Now I want to know is that by rules, can I do so. Or is there a specific period for which I have to compusorily maintain the log files on the server.

confusing, sort my dilemma -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --

It really just depends from host to host. Presently, there are no laws regarding this in the United States. I believe some of the EU may have laws for ISP's regarding log storage.
If your hosts offers no automatic way to rotate, I would recommend you create a quick cron job to rotate them for you.

Hope i was of some help

Well, ours varies pretty widely, but in general we compress all logs older than 1 day, then delete any older than 30 days. This seems to work well at saving space and also leaving the logs available if they are needed.

Good luck with yours mate -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --

our modus operandi is this:-

We keep all log files for one month, this is set default under the client domain, the client does however have the ability to modify this according to his or her own needs. This provides flexibility. -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --

as far as i am concerned, i don't believe there are any laws in any country about it, for more india specfic questions you might be better asking a lawyer over there.

Relating to the original question
I would probably say 30 days should be fine -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --
