updating queries?

Hi all,
I am updating 2 tables with single query but it takes long to complete and lock the tables for long time. The other update queries are waiting for the lock to be released during this time. I am trying to do the time consuming update in iteration instead of waiting for long time to complete. Can someone suggest how to do this?
