Permission denied!!!

Hello people,
I just installed the standard 5.0 MySql on a RedHat Linux V2.4. After completing installation, I run the command: bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &. But the program aborts with an error, which states that the program couldn't create a PID file in --> /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid -- Permission denied
Any ideas what may be the problem?

See if you run the "mysqld_safe" command as user "root" or not. And try running "sh -x bin/mysqld_safe" to get some more verbose debugging. -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --
