mysql can't run on php?

Hi members,
I want to install mantis. I get errors when running the install script saying that mysql is not configured to run on php. I call the phpinfo() function and I see nothing relating to mysql. Opening php.ini file, it looks alright.
the extension_dir points to /usr/lib/php4 which includes the mysql.so extension.
I located the mysql.sock file and pointed the default socket to it, but nothing. Please suggest what am i doing wrong?
