slow performance

hi members,
I have created a new installation of mySQL on a fresh Server 2003 install. I have db with few tables. A couple of the tables have around 25,000 records. A reasonably complex query takes 20 seconds to return. The identical db on another machine that is half the cpu speed, half the memory, and an older version of mySQL, and it returns the same query in less than 1 second. Please tell me how to make the identical query take 20 seconds on one machine and no time on another?
