Can't connect to local MySQL server!!

I am running OS X (10.3.9) and I have MySQL 5 installed via the installer. It doesn't appear that MySQL is running. how to restart it in OS X? The directions in the installation documentation to start up MySQL are:

shell> sudo /Library/StartupItems/MySQLCOM/MySQLCOM start

Give no errors!

useing MySQL Administrator or "/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql" then I get the error message:

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)
