new site- how many links be fit

Hi fellows

I'm about to launch my site online close to placing a site online but I have read that some sites that are new and when launched may be looked at as spam because of all the inbound links pointing to them. The engines see this as a new site trying to manipulate the engines and inturn get penalized so, how many links would be a good starting point to have when it is launched for the first time? I wanted to join a link exchange. The site states that your site will be placed on their 4000 sites.

The question you have to ask yourself is does this link exchange sound natural? Would a random web user understand it and approve of it?
If not and I would think they wouldn't then what you are doing is going to be considered by Google etc. to be questionable behavior.So if you try it, don't complain about getting banned from Google.

i wouldn't recommend you going to link exchange.
as far as quesion of penalizing is concerned, i am not sure about it but it's exactly what's right in the webmaster guidelines about getting involved in artificial linking schemes to boost rankings.
