Blogs on site or off site

Recently a client with a blog asked me if he would be better off hosting his site elsewhere which could give him either a domain based on the blogging plaform or his own domain.
I think a link from an external site would be worth more than one from your own site.
On the other hand if you've already been blogging for a while, you have incoming links and the search engines are aware of your site it seems like it might not be worth it.
Would setting up a domain name and pointing it straight to the Web site hosted blog help or hurt him in any way from an SEO standpoint?

I recommend keeping the blog on your current domain. No need to try and trick the search engines and besides they will more than likely be able to tell it is your site by the IP, link structure and registration info. It’s just not worth it at all. Moreover, one should use the blog to build up authority status and quality deeplinks to the domain you ar eusing already

The business really doesn't have a preference in terms of the URL, it could be blog.(company's name).com or www.(company"s name blog).com. In terms of SEO, would it make more sense to launch with a different domain name or blog.(company's name).com ?

hiiii, as far as SEO is concerned it makes no difference at all. You could create any domain name you want and still get it ranked the same as any other for whatever phrases you optimize the actual site pages for.
