home page links and internal page links!!

hi guys
I wanna know does it really makes any difference to internal pages how many backlinks the home page has?
The thing is that a site has been redesigned and the draft redesign as it stands has no text on the home page other than the nav bar. The page contains a graphic and the navigation. The internal pages are all new. The domain is 7 years old and the site has barely changed in all this time until now. Will the internal pages benefit from the home page external links or will it be difficult for them to rank well given their lack of links in their own right.

First things first put some text on homepage because if your older page has text and the new one doesn't then in my opinion it is going to affect it only negativly.

One option in front for me is to change the home page but I'm trying to understand as much as it's possible the way that links work. I'm also aware that i might be asking the wrong question or in the wrong way so bear with me.

Most certainly, the internal pages will benefit from the home page external links. Many sites just have home page links from external sites and that link popularity is passed to the inner pages. This assumes a good site architecture.

The internal page will benefit from links to the home page. It is better to build links directly to every page you want to rank well. In fact, you might want to treat every group of search terms as a separate campaign you will then see that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
