I think that getting one way links to your site is a very good thing. However, I recently read that getting too many links in a relatively short time could have an negative effect on your site. I have managed to get several one way links pointing to my site but now I am questioning if this actually had an adverse effect on my site.

There is no need to worry, even if something happens, i mean in the worst case scenario, all that will occur is the new inbound links will be filtered or dropped.

Several links are fine and expected but sites that suddenly have many links pointing at them without any appreciable increase in traffic or content can be seen as suspect. Since you're not penalized for who links to you, what happens in most cases are those links are ignored and whatever value they might have passed to you doesn't.
