Take my advise

Put up a custom 404 page first. Then check through your site map and remove those pages.
You can also use .htaccess to tell google not to crawl those pages. -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --

I thought that Google removes 404 error pages by itself.

Is that true or....... -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members. To become a member, click here --

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Then when you've thought they did, 3 years later and they will show up again. Google likes to relive the past occaisionally.

I'd take advantage of google wanting to crawl the pages and put up a page with a 301 redirect to a page that actually exists and has value. That way if there are any links pointing to the page that is gone you can take advantage of any value it may have. -- This message may have been cut off and the rest will only be shown to members.
