I suppose this is true for general directories, but for niche it matters a lot less. I think this whole idea of people giving up as they go through the lists is quite significant. It could well mean that you get more quality manual submissions with an A than a Z as the first letter of your domain.
For submitters, it's an indication that you may get a better average response time from the Z, Y and X's. Submitting in reverse alphabetical order could be a good strategy for
