Manual submissions should have a degree of autonomy involved. Generally firefox plugin/extensions are used, and profiles created so that the information for the site is entered once, and then you never do another keystroke again. This negates the variance factor that has been brought up, since this method would actually reduce the frequeuncy of errors not increase them.
With FF extensions/plugins you still have to manually navigate to the directory and through its categories to submit. The problem with automated software is that whenever a directory owner sees 100 submissions from the same person sitting in their pending queue they are going to flag the lot as dodgy and delete them.
