The bottom line is, don't link unless there is a real reason to do so. Most times, the link farms of the past were an obvious attempt to inflate popularity.
If there is a logical and real reason to link one client site with another - a very related product or service that would benefit customers - I would not let any Search engine dictate that and would link either way.
