I've worked with many SEO companies. They don't care about there own rankings, per se. They care about there client's rankings. Would you care if they were #1 for SEO, but couldn't rank any of their client's sites? ...OR... having tons of rankings for client's sites and their own site on page 50 for SEO?
I have an SEO company, mostly comprised of real estate clients and I don't spend anytime optimizing my business site for the SE's. I put all my resources into my client's site. Results are what they wanna see, which is true with potential clients too.
